Connected Communities

Vision Statement : Through effective and strategic community partnerships, the Dell Foundation supports educational services programs that address the critical and most basic technology access needs of its neighbors in Dell Communities - prerequisites to success in the digital world.

The Dell Foundation solicits competitive applications from 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations for a number of partnerships every two years.

Grants are awarded in the amount of $50,000 over a two year period.

The Dell Foundation has selected the following programs as recipients of "Connected Community" funding in 2008 - 2009. Through effective and strategic community partnerships with these organizations, the Dell Foundation helps empower its communities by addressing the critical and most basic needs of its neighbors - success in the digital economy.

Austin Children’s Museum
Austin Children’s Museum creates innovative learning experiences for children and families that equip and inspire the next generation of creative problem solvers. Dell Foundation supports Lightbulb: AMC Web Log, an online medium that provides in-depth content and opportunities for dialog and shared learning experiences between guests, staff and museum guest contributors.

Austin Children’s Shelter
Austin Children’s Shelter provides emergency shelter, high quality care, and hope for the future to the abused, abandoned and neglected children of our community. Dell Foundation underwrites the Building Tomorrows: Technology Learning Lab that provides technology tools and education in core areas of reading, math, and science for Shelter children ages 3-17.

Austin Public Library Foundation : The mission of the Austin Public Library Foundations is to support and strengthen Austin’s public libraries by increasing awareness about the Library and to raise funds to provide or expand programs and services. Dell Foundation supports Intern Services, a tutoring and mentoring program delivered to low-income youth by library school students.

Austin School of Film
The Austin School of Film educates, trains and develops emerging artists of all ages to be active participants in shaping our 21st Century culture. Dell Foundation underwrites the Youth Media Outreach Program that includes digital media training, youth filmmaking in Spanish, and an internship program linking youth with industry professionals.

Austin Symphony Orchestra Society
The mission of the Austin Symphony Orchestra Society is to enhance the cultural quality of life for the adults and young people of Austin and Central Texas by providing excellence in music performance and educational programs. Dell Foundation funding underwrites Meet the ASO, a program that connects children in their music classes to the world of classical music and professional musicians through a web-based community chat room.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Capital Area
The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs is to inspire and enable all young people – especially those that need us most – to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. Funding from Dell Foundation supports the Club Tech Technology Program designed to enhance educational outcomes and decrease the digital divide for marginalized school-aged kids.

Central Texas Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
CTSPCA provides shelter, food, medical care and adoption services for homeless and abandoned dogs and cats. Dell Foundation underwrites the Humane Education Program which provides the opportunity for children to use computers and software to write stories and descriptions of adoptable pets.

Children’s Medical Center Foundation of Central Texas (CMC)
The CMC Foundation is the fundraising entity for Dell Children’s Medical Center, a member of Seton Family of Hospitals. Dell Foundation supports the Family Resource Center which provides information and support for patients and families related to hospitalization, child health, parenting, and pediatric health resources.

Communities in Schools
Communities in Schools helps kids stay in school and prepare for life by providing school-based services including: supportive guidance, educational enhancement, health and human services, career exploration and job readiness training. Funding from Dell Foundation underwrites the Tech Tots program that provides low-income families with a home computer, a tech mentor and information on how to enhance their child’s school readiness skills using technology.

Girl Scouts of Central Texas
Girl Scouting builds the courage, confidence, and character of girls who make the world a better place. Dell Foundation funds The EDGE STEM Initiative which offers access to technology workshops, spring and summer camps, after-school and Saturday programs designed to teach computer and Internet skills.

Girlstart empowers girls in math, science, engineering and technology. Funding from Dell Foundation supports Girlstart Summer Camps that offer hands-on technology learning in math, science, technology and engineering in fun, theme camps.

River City Youth Foundation
The River City Youth Foundation helps youth and families in Dove Springs live safe, healthy and prosperous lives. Dell Foundation supports the Computer Learning Lab/Centro de Tecnologia which provides hands-on technology learning at two facilities year round.

San Juan Diego Catholic High School
San Juan Diego Catholic High School provides quality, private college-preparatory education to students enriched by an innovative internship program. Dell Foundation funding will update technology in the Student Resource Lab to provide new tools to enable the teaching of practical computer technology skills, access to college information and materials for daily usage as part of academic curriculum.

Skillpoint Alliance
Skillpoint Alliance builds partnerships among industry, education and the community, leading to college and career success for Central Texans, while meeting employers’ needs for a qualified workforce. Dell Foundation underwrites Digital Media for Youth to create and implement digital media curricula in Central Texas high school classrooms to train students to use advanced technology skills.

The Nobelity Project
Nobelity works with Nobel Laureates and other inspiring leaders who are dedicated to a better future for children and a more peaceful and sustainable world. Dell Foundation supports Nobelity WebQuest: One Peace at a Time to enable the distribution to teachers of this feature documentary which focuses on solutions to global problems.

The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army provides a broad range of services for the homeless. Dell Foundation underwrites the Children’s Learning Center which strives to meet the needs of homeless school-aged children staying The Army’s Emergency Shelter.

University of Texas Foundation: UT Elementary School
The University of Texas Elementary School is an open-enrollment charter school and research-based demonstration school that applies new knowledge produced in the academic setting directly to classrooms in inner city schools. Dell Foundation supports Empowering Students and their Families through Technology which provides minority and low-income children and families with access to educational tools and training in technology skills and computer literacy.

Youth InterACTIVE
Youth InterACTIVE inspires and empowers youth to value and live healthy, happy, active lives through health and fitness, lifelong learning and community involvement. The Dell Foundation underwrites the ACTIVE Life Challenge Program and Website to enhance and expand its interactive website of health and fitness information and interactive games, plus provide online management tools for physical education teachers.


Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Dell Foundation underwrites the Mobile E-Lab for Girls Program that offers computer-based learning after school and at summer camps.

Nashville Public Television
Nashville Public Television (PBS) engages audiences of all ages with stimulating cultural, civic and entertainment experiences that educate. Funding from Dell Foundation supports NPT Internet Literacy Project for Immigrant and Refugee Families program that provides computer literacy training and access.

Oasis Center, Inc.
The Oasis Center helps youth grow, thrive and create positive change in their lives and in the community. The Center assists youth in crisis, provides community-based support and develops youth leadership. Dell Foundation funds underwrite Increasing College Access which will provide comprehensive and individualized college admissions and financial aid expertise to support and increase the college-going rate, retention and degree completion of low-income and first generation college students.

Youth Villages
The mission of Youth Villages is to help children and families live successfully. Dell Foundation underwrites Konnected Kids to provide computer literacy skills to at-risk youth in Davidson County.


Boys & Girls Clubs
The Boys & Girls Club inspires and enables all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. Dell Foundation supports Club Tech which provides Club members with daily access to computer technology, and training in basic computer skills, productivity and educational software.

KIPP Reach Academy Charter School
KIPP Reach Academy Charter School is an affiliate of a national college preparatory system that empowers disadvantaged students to develop the knowledge, skills and character traits necessary to pursue a college education and a life of value, joy and integrity. Funding from Dell Foundation supports Intervention through Technology to help close students’ achievement gaps via the instructional technology PLATO Learning.

North Carolina

Girl Scouts Tarheel Triad Council Inc.
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Support from Dell Foundation underwrites Girls Go Hi-Tech which will increase girls’ knowledge of and involvement with technology.

North Carolina Zoological Society
The mission of the Society is to support education, conservation, research and recreation at the North Carolina Zoological Park, a nature facility that exhibits species of animals and plants. Dell Foundation supports KidsConnect! Connecting to the World through Technology that offers an innovative educational website and Field Trip Earth workshops to enhance students’ interactive computer skills.

Requests addressed at least one of the following needs and proposed and substantiated outcomes. (Collaboration between organizations and integrated proposals were encouraged):
  • Hands on technology access with Internet integration for children and families with limited resources.
  • Online community services and support for children and families with limited resources.
  • Training programs designed to help children learn how to use the Internet.
  • Access and involvement in Web-based communities for those with historically-limited access.
The Dell Foundation considered the following conditions in the application:
  • Catalyst - Foundation support would be vital or catalytic to a proposed project's success.
  • Collaboration - A collaborative network exists that multiplies the impact of the grant.
  • Sustainability - The proposed project is likely to continue and expand after the grant period.
  • Innovation - The proposal is innovative and efficient in the use of funds.
  • Avoids redundancy - Administrative expenses are reduced by sharing resources with other agencies and groups.
  • Outcome oriented - The project is well-planned and has well-defined measurable outcomes.
  • Relevancy - The project reflects and meets a basic community need.
  • Diversity - Services are culturally sensitive and barrier free.
  • Immediacy - Funding is directed to those most in need.
  • Prevention orientation - Integration with educational programs.
  • Efficient - Effective, innovative use of technological infrastructure.
  • Community collaboration - Affects more than one county of geographic scope.
  • Quality standards - Adherence to the Better Business Bureau's Charitable Standards.
