Vision Statement : Through effective and strategic community partnerships, the Dell Foundation supports educational and literacy services programs that address the critical and most basic educational needs of its neighbors in Dell Communities - prerequisites to success in the digital world.
The Dell Foundation solicits competitive applications from 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations for a number of partnerships every two years.
Grants are awarded in the amount of $50,000 over a two year period.
Deadline for receipt of Literate Communities Grant Applications: June 6th, 2008. Please apply by completing this application.
Applications of more than 10 total pages will not be favorably reviewed
The Literate Community Grant recipients will be announced on July 18th, 2008.

Big Brothers Big Sisters helps children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships. Dell Foundation funds the Williamson County Mentoring Program that matches at-risk children with caring adults in order to make a positive impact in academic performance, confidence levels, and reduction in substance abuse, teen pregnancy and delinquent behaviors.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas (BBBS) helps
boys and girls in difficult situations achieve their potential
through caring one-to-one mentoring relationships.
Reading is Fundamental and Capital Area Reach Out and Read have merged into one agency, BookSpring with the mission: to promote early literacy by teaching parents effective ways of sharing books with their children beginning in infancy and delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families. Dell Foundation underwrites the Infant and Preschool Program designed to get books into children’s lives before they enter public school.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Capital Area
The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Capital Area is to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. Dell Foundation supports the Education Program that provides comprehensive homework help/tutoring, daily access to computers, math and reading programs to improve school performance.
Camp Fire USA Balcones Council
Camp Fire USA Balcones Council builds caring, confident youth and future leaders.
Dell Foundation will fund the After-school Literacy Skills Project that offers enrichment activities through literacy skills, environmental science and outdoor recreation.
Cedar Park Public Library Foundation
The Cedar Park Public Library Foundation supports the Library’s mission of encouraging lifelong learning and promoting literacy for all members of the community.
Dell Foundation will underwrite the Children’s Reading and Computer Literacy Project which includes Children’s Reading and Literacy Enrichment, the Summer Reading Program, the Computer Literacy Project, and Adult Enrichment activities.
Court Appointed Special Advocates of Travis County (CASA)
CASA recruits, screens, trains and supervises volunteers to provide Guardian ad Litem services to abused and neglected children in the court system to help them find safe and permanent homes. The Dell Foundation will underwrite the Educational Advocacy Program that targets youth who are in school and are in need of special education services or educational advocacy.
Charles A. Dana Center/University of Texas at Austin
The Charles A. Dana Center is an organized research unit of the College of Natural Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin that works at the local and national levels to address disparities in educational equity. Dell Foundation funds help underwrite the AmeriCorps for Community Engagement and Education that brings together the resources of federal, state and local agencies to deliver quality tutoring initiatives to at-risk children in Title 1 elementary schools.
Extend-A-Care for Kids
Extend-A-Care for Kids’ mission is to support families, employers, and communities by providing child care to school-age children that is high in quality, convenient, affordable and enriching. Dell Foundation funds the Library (serving teachers, students and parents) and the First-Rate Readers Program (providing early-literacy and pleasure reading activities/projects at 55 child care centers in Central Texas).
FamilyConnections/Austin Families’ mission is to improve the quality of early education and care of our community’s children by providing information, education and resources to parents, caregivers, teachers and community leaders. Dell Foundation funding underwrites EEQUIP (Early Education Quality improvement Project) which educates and trains parents and child care teachers to build early literacy skills via language- and print-rich environments.
Junior Achievement of Central Texas
Junior Achievement’s mission is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy, with a focus on financial literacy. Dell Foundation funding supports the JA Titan Program which introduces students to critical economics, manufacturing and management decisions.
The Junior League of Austin
The Junior League of Austin is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Dell Foundation support will help underwrite Con Mi MADRE which improves educational opportunities for Hispanic girls (with the active support of their mothers) and supports their pursuit of higher education, through programming, counseling, tutoring, and leadership conferences.
KLRU-TV (Public Broadcasting System)
KLRU-TV reflects, celebrates and inspires Central Texans through creative excellence, community engagement and life-long learning. Dell Foundation sponsors the airing of the Sesame Street program and the Ready to Learn Service (family education and school-readiness workshops.
LifeWorks (Youth and Family Alliance)
LifeWorks (Youth and Family Alliance) transitions youth and families from crisis to safety and success, providing a continuum of services to youth and families. Dell Foundation funding will support the GED and Literacy Program to provide youth with instruction and education resources necessary to gain employment.
Open Door Pre-School
Open Door Pre-School provides a quality inclusive preschool program to children of diverse abilities and backgrounds in a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment that promotes respect and acceptance. Dell Foundation underwrites Creating Lifelong Learners: Curriculum Enhancement to grow and expand kindergarten readiness.
Paramount & State Theatres/Austin Theatre Alliance
The Paramount & State Theatres/Austin Theatre Alliance works to enhance the quality of life for area residents through presentation of the widest selection of the finest quality theatre and performing area productions possible; promoting artistic expression and appreciation among all segments of the Central Texas community. Foundation support will underwrite Literacy to Life, an education/outreach program that will travel to schools to perform live productions of books, science lessons, reading and literacy.
Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, Regional Unit of the South Central States
The mission Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, Regional Unit of the South Central States, is to create opportunity for individual success by providing and promoting the effective use of accessible educational materials. RFB&D is the world’s leading producer of educational materials in recorded and computerized formats. Dell Foundation funds the Learning through Listening Educational Outreach Program that provides audio books and equipment to students and teachers in the school setting.
YMCA of Austin
The mission of the YMCA of Austin is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Dell Foundation funds support the Dell Super Summer Reading Program for children who have been identified by school officials as not performing at grade level due to poor reading and comprehension skills.
Zachary Scott Theatre
Zachary Scott Theatre creates a unique theatre experience that ignites the imagination, lifts the spirit, and creates meaningful dialogue, engaging our community. Dell Foundation funding will underwrite Theatre Education Programs to serve ethnically diverse young audiences with interactive plays and performances.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid Tennessee
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid Tennessee works to make a positive difference in the lives of children in need and to assist them in reaching their highest potential by facilitating a professionally-supported one-to-one mentoring relationships with a committed volunteer. Dell Foundation underwrites the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) High School Bigs Program that matches teen mentors with Little Brothers or Sisters in the public school setting.
Book ‘Em inspires a love of books and reading in all children. Dell Foundation underwrites the Partnership of Hope program that provides critical tools and resources necessary to prepare at-risk children for school success. This program is a collaboration with Books from Birth and Adopt-A-Book.

Dell Foundation funds Project Learn which provides after school programs in homework help, leisure reading, tutoring and learning activities for youth, and parental involvement and school collaborations to support learning.
Homework Hotline provides one-on-one free tutoring by phone to struggling students and their parents. Hotline teachers help students find solutions, understand concepts, create ideas and successfully solve problems. Dell Foundation funding underwrites Homework Hotline service expansion to provide services to children attending 102 schools in mid Tennessee.

The PENCIL Foundation links community resources with Nashville public schools to help young people achieve academic success and prepare for life. Dell Foundation funds the Math Partners Program that recruits and places adult tutors to provide assistance to 5th and 6th grade students who are struggling with basic skills and concepts. The program is expanding to also serve 3rd and 4th graders.
Oklahoma Heritage Association
The Oklahoma Heritage Association preserves Oklahoma’s history and inspires pride in our great state. Dell Foundation funding will underwrite Field Trips to the Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum to provide students the opportunity to learn Oklahoma history.
Positive Tomorrows works to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty – one family at a time – by providing education and family support services to homeless and at-risk children and their families. Dell Foundation underwrites Creating a Positive Tomorrow, Kindergarten-5th Grade that delivers high quality math, science, computer technology and literacy programs in the classroom.
Communities in Schools of Forsyth County
Communities in Schools of Forsyth County champions the connection of much needed community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life. Dell Foundation funds the ABC’s of Literacy Program which teaches parents how to read to their children and provides a fundamental understanding of the free enterprise system to students from grades 1-12.
SciWorks, Science Center & Environmental Park of Forsyth County
SciWorks, Science Center & Environmental Park of Forsyth County, promotes scientific literacy, life-long learning and an appreciation for the sciences by providing innovative education and recreational experiences through interactive programs and exhibits, collections, an environmental park, Planetarium and unique facilities.
Dell Foundation funds Science Education Programs that support the science teaching of K-12 classroom teachers and family science learning. SciWorks also directs the annual Region V Science Fair.
