Unified Data Management

To order, please contact your Dell Sales representative

CommVault software products all use the Common Technology Engine (CTE) architecture. This architecture is the only scalable framework optimised for data management. The CTE provides a common set of services for use by all CommVault products, including secure data movement, a common management console interface, and shared device management.

Galaxy Backup & Recovery

CommVault has designed Galaxy data protection to work differently than other backup offerings, by focusing on what you really need: reliable data recovery. Galaxy recovery is designed around efficient data movement—making it easy for you to browse and find your data, to select as little or as much as you need to restore, and then to recover quickly and efficiently.

For ease of use and efficiency, Galaxy backup is application-aware and designed to self-manage so that you can spend your time on something more productive than double-checking your backup. Point-and-click reporting saves your time and provides useful statistics for tuning your data protection environment.

Galaxy Recovery Advantages

Most other backup offerings start by managing devices. Galaxy software starts from the data, letting you define how you need to manage the data, like how many copies you need, how long you need it and when you want to retire it. Then, Galaxy software does the work for you of managing the devices so that your data is always recoverable.

FeatureBenefit
Easy, fast recovery of file system, database and application data using object-level recovery capabilityFast data recovery and business resumption. No need to recover an entire Exchange database, SharePoint database or volume—which could take days—when all you need is a single data object that restores in minutes.
Easy right-click selection among multiple file versionsSee multiple versions of the same file, and easily select all, some or one, to recover the exact version that your business user requires.
OnePass Restore volume-level recoverySpeeds recovery and reduces tape wearing by restoring all data via a single pass through the tape, without needing to recover multiple versions of the same file like other backup offerings do.
Distributed relational indexEliminates issues typically associated with managing other backup software catalogs. Relational structure ensures high-speed performance for index look-ups. Double-commit store of index ensures recoverability and eliminates the need for administrative management of the index.
Automated index recoveryEnsures that all data backed up can be found and recovered, by automating the process of finding and recovering an absent index.
Recovery redirect options, including in-place, out-of-place, cross-platform and cross-application restoresEnables easy recovery of data among and between systems, for system rebuilds and upgrades, including assisting in migration to new versions of Lotus Notes, Exchange, Apple Mac, and SQL Server systems.
Content indexingExpand your ability to find and recover files with no information on when or where the file was made. Search using a keyword, phrase or wildcards.

Galaxy Backup Advantages

Most other backup offerings make you waste your valuable time just making sure that the job is complete. Galaxy software manages itself and gives you better information on backup and recovery operations, so you can gear data protection for your environment. With Galaxy software, your time is spent on something more productive than double-checking your backups.

FeatureBenefit
Full, incremental, differential and synthetic full backup optionsEnables most efficient data protection possible, and with appropriate use of storage media to ensure just as rapid recovery from synthetics as from fulls.
Easy auxiliary copies, configurable for inline, selective, synchronous or cascadingEnsures compliance with your policies for data protection and retention, and ensures recoverability since a copy of the data is always available.
Global filtersEasy exclusions on all file system clients, or in special cases such as when specified mailbox folders need to be excluded from data protection on every mail client.
Granular backup scheduling, and schedule policies for client and sub-client groupsEliminate human error and fine-tune your backup cycle, by defining a schedule for backup by day of the week and time. When you need the same backup schedule to apply to multiple clients, defining a Schedule Policy saves you time by enabling more efficient management.
Advanced schedulingAvoid holidays and peak user operations during the day, by defining holiday periods and operational windows during which backup will not run.
Granular backup job control and managementFine-tune your operation by controlling all jobs by queue, preemption, priority, on-demand restart and update interval. Suspend, resume or kill any job using the Job Controller Window at will.
Multi-streaming and multiplexingDepending on backup needs, such as when managing many small files or when writing to fast-performing drives, these capabilities can offer improved performance and efficiencies to perform backups more quickly and fit into smaller windows.
Round robin load balancing of backup loads using available systemsPerform backups more quickly and fit into smaller windows, by dividing backup loads among UNIX, Linux, NetWare and Windows systems.
Efficient port utilization when backing up through firewallsDepending on your needs and configuration, as few as two ports are required to backup through a firewall, saving you money and resources.
Pre- and post-process custom capabilityEnables you to configure Galaxy protection for virtually any application or database required, to automate data processing as part of your protection sequence, and embed other operations according to your custom requirements.

On file system backup, you are able to insert pre-processing before the backup job and before the backup starts. Also, you are able to insert post-processing before the recovery job and before the recovery starts. With applications and databases, you have two insertion opportunities.
Data compressionMore efficient network usage for backup data streams, using built-in data compression.
Data encryptionSecures data stream for transmission over insecure networks and for storage on third-party vaults, using the Blowfish algorithm.

Encryption can occur just over the network, with decryption before the data is written. Or, encryption can occur before the data is written and with the decryption keys stored only in the CommServe database.

Galaxy Disk and Media Management Advantages

Most other backup offerings require add-on software (including third-party software) and complex setup to manage what should be basic data protection configurations. Galaxy software makes it easy for you to attach devices and libraries and use them to their maximum potential.

FeatureBenefit
Dynamic and static disk sharingIncrease ROI from expensive disk storage, by sharing access to disk with static and dynamic configurations.
Span disk mount pointsConfigurable to "spill and fill" or "fill and spill" according to your requirements, reduces problems with disk management by enabling Galaxy backup to work across multiple mount points and treat them as a single disk device.
Data aging, which is the automated pruning of older data from diskSaves disk space and reduces backup failures, by removing data that has aged past your immediate-term retention requirement. This can also be overridden for specific backup jobs that you need to retain.
Disk space monitoring with configurable watermarksSaves disk space and reduces backup failures, by monitoring available disk space, tracking disk usage for trend analysis and capacity planning, and triggering automatic pruning of aged data when watermarks are reached. You can also set alerts to notify you when disk thresholds are exceeded.
Media pool data agingProvides efficient management to save your time, by enabling you to exempt entire media pools from data aging.
Easy media pool and scratch pool configuration and managementEfficient management of media pools to save your time and cost of media, including configuration with as many or as few tapes as desired per pool and dynamic pools to add scratch tapes as needed and to rotate expired tapes back into scratch pools.
Enables management and use of a wide variety of popular media according to your requirementsUse what you need for your business, without any artificial restrictions. Choose from magneto/optical, DVD, CD/R, CD/RW, tape and magnetic disks.

Galaxy Library Management Advantages

Most other backup offerings require add-on software (including third-party software) and complex setup to manage what should be basic data protection configurations. Galaxy software makes it easy for you to attach devices and libraries and use them to their maximum potential.

FeatureBenefit
Shared library managementIncreased ROI on expensive library equipment, by providing shared access to libraries and built-in robot management from multiple backup servers. Because library sharing is built into Galaxy software, it is easier to deploy, manage and maintain than with other backup offerings.
Shared drive managementAppend data and fill removable media such as tape, rather than wasting tape and increasing your costs because tapes are not filled when you need to rotate them off-site.
Management of more than one type of drive in the same libraryAvoid the need for expensive add-on or third-party software to manage different types of tape drives in the same library.
Rapid and easy configuration of library connections, even remotelyAvoid lengthy re-indexing of library cartridges and rapidly set up library management, even when deploying Galaxy software remotely and with no need for local intervention or configuration. This can save your money for professional services, when initially deploying Galaxy software and every time you add or change library equipment.
Bar code and blind library managementPreserves your choice of library equipment, to manage what you have to its best performance.
