Dell Launches Affordable Super Computer Pilot Programme To Accelerate Research and Development

Bracknell, August 4, 2008

  • Universities, research institutes and commercial businesses across EMEA sign up to pilot
  • Dell introduces pre-configured High Performance Cluster Solutions
Dell has launched a High Performance Cluster (HPC) solutions pilot programme with European universities, research institutes and commercial businesses to provide affordable super computing power at the departmental level. As part of this programme, Dell is developing a new range of pre-configured HPC solutions with both Windows and Linux operating systems designed to lower the cost of high-powered computing for these organisations, enabling them to increase the compute capacity available for research. The programme will be formally launched in the Autumn. Organisations participating in the pilot include:
  • No 1 Currency, provider of high street foreign currency, in the United Kingdom
  • Insilicio, a design and developer of simulation software platforms for the non-manufacturing industries, in France
  • Sorim, a new developer of medical scanners, in Switzerland
  • Technical University Dresden, one of Germany’s largest education centres in the field of computer science
  • Technical University Berlin, an internationally renowned university in the German capital
  • Catholic University Leuven, a Flemish University in Belgium
  • INRA Bordeaux, the local branch of the number one agricultural institute in Europe
  • ESI Group, a French-based software editor for the numerical simulation of prototype and manufacturing process engineering in applied mechanics
  • Meteo France, offering weather-information including forecasts
“European research institutes and universities are battling to maintain vital research programmes whilst their budgets are being squeezed,” said James Quarles, Director of Enterprise Solutions, Dell EMEA. “Equally, commercial businesses doing research and development of new software solutions have similar challenges. This pilot programme is designed to provide the computing power needed to accelerate the research process, whilst reducing costs and simplifying the deployment of super computers. This will enable European organisations to extend their HPC capabilities to the departmental level.”

Dell’s new range of pre-configured HPC solutions will combine leading open source software including Red Hat Enterprise Linux with best-of-breed server and storage technologies to create a range of pre-configured, scalable HPC packages ranging from 4 to 32 nodes. The solution is based on Dell PowerEdgeTM M-Series blades to enable large cluster environments to save on power and cooling costs while increasing server capacity. Dell will also be introducing a second solution for customers that prefer to use a Windows environment later in the year.

Dell is reducing the complexity and cost, simplifying cluster management, maintenance and support, and speeding up deployment by basing its HPC solutions on existing, validated architectures and industry-standard technologies.

“We needed a significant increase in processing power, from a solution that could be delivered to a fixed budget, within a very tight timeframe, and was easily scalable. Dell were able to satisfy us on all counts,” said Gonçalo Albuquerque, Directeur, Développement de logiciels (Director of Software Development), Insilicio. “With the Dell HPC solution, we will still be able to tailor the new HPC solutions to meet our own specific requirements, while the comparatively low cost to deploy offers a rapid return on investment.”
