Why Choose Dell Flat Panel Displays?

Industry projections show that more and more users will be moving to flat panel displays. Why? There are many advantages to flat panel technology over traditional CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors, including enhanced performance, a low total cost of ownership, improved style, increased functionality, easier to recycle and contain less lead. Dell is far ahead of the curve, bringing you a full line of leading-edge options to accommodate every user and budget.

Liquid Crystals vs. Cathode Ray Tubes

Flat panel monitors rely on a technology called Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). This incredibly lightweight and energy efficient innovation uses liquid crystals like a shutter that either blocks backlight or allows it to pass through coloured filters to produce a measurably superior image. Conventional CRT monitors, meanwhile, use electron guns to shoot a beam of electrons at the phosphor-coated front surface of a picture tube.

Performance

LCD flat panel monitors are the increasingly popular choice due in large part to superior performance in a number of areas:
  • Brightness — LCDs deliver bright, sharp images and don't suffer from reduction in clarity, allowing detailed viewing even in well-lit environments.
  • Contrast Ratio — LCDs offer greater contrast ratios, allowing improved colour accuracy and uniformity for photographs and images.
  • Sharpness and Flicker — LCDs rely on individual pixel activation rather than electron scanning — enabling sharper, no-flicker images that can reduce eyestrain and boost productivity.
  • Geometry and Focus — LCDs can provide a digital connection that delivers even crispness across the screen and perfect focus. Analogue CRTs cannot deliver this performance during the product lifetime, often suffering from loss of focus and crispness.
  • Digital vs. Analogue — Because LCDs can offer a digital PC connection (DVI), they're not prone to the image degradation that sometimes occurs with analogue-connected CRT displays.

Cost of Ownership

Flat Panel LCD technology can help you reduce overall cost of ownership for a number of reasons:
  • Flat panels use significantly less power and emit less heat than CRTs. This can result in lower electricity and air conditioning costs.
  • LCDs consume less space than CRTs and generally weigh much less than similar sized CRTs. This results in easier transportation and additional usable work space.
  • LCDs are expected to have a longer productive life.

Style and Functionality

The flat panel monitor's incredibly thin, lightweight design offers maximum image size in minimal space, not to mention compatibility with the trend toward smaller PCs. Our newest models accommodate numerous features that the bulkier traditional CRT design can't:
  • Tilt, swivel and portrait viewing.
  • Height adjustable stand
  • More USB 2.0 ports
  • Attachable sound bar
  • Easy detachment for wall hanging

A flat panel display delivers a viewable image equal to its full screen size. The limitations of CRT technology make the viewable image of a CRT monitor smaller than its stated screen size - often by one inch or more.

Environmental Impact

Flat panel LCD technology is generally more environmentally friendly — both to your computing environment and the natural environment:
  • Less plastic and lighter weight make for easy recycling.
  • Low amounts of environmentally sensitive materials, including lead and cadmium.
  • Low electromagnetic wave emissions.
