2 - Taking Great Photos

IT ALL STARTS WITH A CLICK

With all the cool features that generally come standard with today’s digital cameras, the possibilities for taking great photos can seem limitless — and maybe a little intimidating. Learning to be a good photographer takes practice, but understanding your camera and its settings will greatly improve your pictures. Dell Photo Learning Center can show you that getting started is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Click TipClick Tip: Always use a full battery. When your battery is low, you’ll experience a greater delay between shots as the flash recovers.

Smile. Girl Taking Picture1. Take the Shot
Just like film cameras, digital cameras have an on/off switch and a shutter release. Most cameras come ready to be charged and used immediately. Regardless of how many options your model features, taking a picture is as simple as pressing the shutter release button until the photo is created.

Click TipClick Tip: Zoom in and out to find the best framing before you create your image.

Getting to know a camera and how it reacts to different lighting situations can take time. After you’ve taken a few test shots, play around with the light settings, exposure and focus to see how they change the shot.

Click TipClick Tip: Sometimes your camera’s LCD monitor is too small to show how setting changes are affecting your shots. You’ll need to download photos to your computer to accurately judge the difference.

Surfer in Camera Display2. Review the Shot
Most cameras automatically use the LCD display to immediately show each picture you take. You can also use the review button or playback mode to view all of your images at once. Is the shot blurry? Is the composition good? Do you need to adjust your light levels or other settings? The great thing about digital photography is the ability to see your image immediately so you can improve your photography skills.

Click TipClick Tip: Most cameras allow you to zoom in and out of images as you review — usually by using the camera’s zoom control.

Laptop on the Couch
Windows 7 TipWindows 7 Tip: With Windows 7, it's easy to import your pictures from your digital camera to your computer. Windows Photo Gallery lets you simply plug your camera into your computer and then guides you through the steps necessary to add your pictures to your computer.
3. Get Connected
When your memory card is full or you’re done shooting, you’ll need to move your pictures to your computer or printer. In most cases, you can either connect your camera directly via USB cable or take the memory card out of your camera and insert it in a card reader connected to your computer. When moving pictures from the memory card to your computer, most systems will ask whether you want to delete them from the memory card (we recommend using the format option in the camera instead).

Click TipClick Tip: To help maximize the life of your memory card, it is best to delete pictures from your memory card using your camera rather than your PC. Please refer to the manual included with your camera to learn how.

Click TipClick Tip: If your current computer does not have a memory card reader, don’t worry! Many Dell monitors and printers have built-in card readers that allow you to view, copy and move pictures to your PC. You can also purchase a digital media card reader through Dell.
